After two years of national fortitude and collective sacrifice, the moment to end all COVID restrictions has arrived. While this is a moment to celebrate the return of our freedoms, it also serves as an opportunity to reflect on the tragic loss of life that has occurred throughout the pandemic.
No matter how much we disliked the restrictions, we cannot forget that they were originally introduced to protect people’s health and prevent the unnecessary loss of life. I am proud of the way our communities came together and kept each other safe.
Thanks to the UK’s world-leading vaccination programme, the risk of death and serious illness from COVID-19 has been significantly reduced. Given that Britons are now some of the most vaccinated people on Earth, it is only right that we must now learn to live with COVID.
I completely understand some people’s anxiety at this announcement, especially those with pre-existing health conditions. While restrictions have been scrapped, I would highly encourage everyone to continue using common-sense and do what they must to protect their health and that of their families.
Let me reiterate, vaccines drastically reduce the risk of death and serious illness, so please, if you haven’t already, get vaccinated.
