Paul Howell, Member of Parliament for Sedgefield, has today expressed deep concern and commitment to action following the release of the Infected Blood Inquiry findings. The Inquiry, which has uncovered the devastating impacts of contaminated blood products supplied to NHS patients during the 1970s and 1980s, has highlighted the need for immediate justice and comprehensive support for the affected individuals and their families.
Statement from Paul Howell MP:
"I am profoundly moved by the testimonies and findings presented by the Infected Blood Inquiry. The courage of the survivors and their families in coming forward to share their painful experiences cannot be overstated. It is clear that they have faced unimaginable suffering, not only from the initial infections but also from decades of neglect and inadequate support.
As your MP, I am committed to ensuring that those affected by this scandal receive the justice they deserve. This includes:
- Full Compensation: Advocating for comprehensive financial compensation for all victims and their families to address the long-term impact on their lives.
- Medical and Psychological Support: Ensuring that lifelong medical and psychological support is readily available and accessible to all affected individuals.
- Accountability: Calling for those responsible for the distribution and oversight of contaminated blood products to be held accountable for their actions.
This inquiry has laid bare the failings of past governments and health authorities. It is our duty to not only acknowledge these failings but to take decisive action to rectify them. I will be working closely with my colleagues in Parliament to push for the implementation of the Inquiry's recommendations and to ensure that such a tragedy is never repeated.
In addition, I urge the government to establish a dedicated task force to oversee the delivery of compensation and support services, ensuring that they are tailored to meet the unique needs of each affected individual.
The voices of the survivors and their families must be heard and acted upon. Their resilience in the face of such adversity is a testament to their strength and determination. It is time for us to stand by them, to right the wrongs of the past, and to provide the support and justice they have long been denied."
