This week, local MP Paul Howell announced his support for posthumously honouring veteran Bill Cooksey for his outstanding contributions to the community. Cooksey, who recently passed away was a tireless advocate for veterans and a dedicated volunteer for charity.
"Bill Cooksey was a true hero, both on and off the battlefield," said Paul Howell. "His service to our country was exemplary, and his dedication to helping others was an inspiration to all who knew him."
After his military service, Cooksey became a vocal advocate for veterans, working tirelessly to improve their lives. He was also a dedicated volunteer for several local charities.
Most of you will remember Bill for walking 100 miles on his 100th birthday to raise money for the NHS.
He then pushed himself further, cycling miles ahead of his 101st last year.
In September, Bill completed the AJ Bell Great North Run in less than six hours, becoming the oldest person to complete a half-marathon at the age of 102.
In recognition of Cooksey's outstanding service, Paul s calling for him to be posthumously awarded. Such award would be a fitting tribute to a man who made a lasting impact on our community.
Bill Cooksey was a true patriot. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
