Paul Howell MP is pleased to be raising awareness for Anti Bullying Week 2023 - Make A Noise About Bullying.
Anti-Bullying Week 2023 is coordinated in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by the Anti-Bullying Alliance. This year it has the theme 'Make A Noise About Bullying' and will take place from Monday 13th - Friday 17th November.
The week will be kicked off with one of Paul's favourites - Odd Socks Day on Monday 13th November - where adults and children wear odd socks to celebrate what makes us all unique.
The fantastic theme of Make A Noise About Bullying came about following a consultation with teachers and pupils by the Anti-Bullying Alliance which coordinates Anti-Bullying Week every year in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Teachers and children wanted a theme that empowered them to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes.
Following the success of the campaign in 2022 – when 80% of schools marked the week, reaching over 7.5 million children and young people – Anti-Bullying Week will remind everyone whether it’s in school, at home, at work, in the community or online, together we can bring an end to bullying.
Some of the consequences of bullying include:
- Depression and anxiety
- Low self-esteem and loneliness
- Changes in sleep and eating patterns
- Health complaints and physical injuries
- Loss of interest in activities and school participation
- Substance abuse and aggression
- Self-harming behaviour and violence
- Suicide and death
Paul Howell MP said:
“Anti Bullying Week is so important because bullying is a serious problem that I am sure the majority of us have experienced. Whether it be at school, work, or online, it can stay with people forever and cause hugely negative effects on our physical, mental, and emotional health.
I know it can be incredibly difficult to stand up and tell someone, no matter your age, that you are being bullied, but it is crucial to do so to put an end to it. Too often, people can also be silent when they see bullying take place, again please do speak up and tell someone if you witness someone being bullied.”
