STANDING UP FOR AVIATION
Every day, professional pilots make a vital contribution to our society, security and economy.
That’s why I was delighted to attend BALPA’s recent reception to champion the modernise, decarbonise and spur skills development in the sector.
Did you know training to be a commercial pilot often costs cadets in excess of £120,000?
Currently there is no student funding available for this huge cost, unlike other professions including law and medicine.
Trainee pilots, who funded their training with a student loan, would very quickly hit the repayment threshold once in full time employment. In time, many will pay higher rate tax: a low risk and great return on investment for taxpayers.
More broadly, BALPA's parliamentry reception focussed on a range of other issues including flight safety, pandemic recovery, and how to build a diverse and sustainable future for the industry at large.
