RESHUFFLE EXPLAINED
This week you will have seen that the PM has reshuffled his Cabinet. Since the end of a hectic week is fast approaching I thought it would be useful to drop on and explain some of the changes.
Driving this Government is the urgent need to reflect the priorities of the British people. That is why the PM has established four new departments, with the right teams to build a better future for our children and grandchildren. These changes mean that government is set up in the right way to succeed for the British people – with cheaper energy bills, faster growth, short waiting lists, and harnessing the power of innovation to keep us safe.
These are the new departments:
Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. We need a single energy department, so we can maintain our global leadership on climate change and grasp the opportunities from renewables. This will focus on securing our energy supply, bringing down bills and thereby reducing inflation. It will also ensure we meet our Net Zero commitments, helping the economy to grow and improving the UK’s energy efficiency.
Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. To make the most of our record R&D spending, we are creating a department whose sole focus is delivering in science, innovation, and technology. This will support innovation across public services including the NHS and schools, capitalise on R&D investment with innovative firms, and strengthen our international collaboration. It will also deliver the world-leading Online Safety Bill.
Department for Business and Trade. This will bring together business experts and world-class trade negotiators to make the UK the best place to start and grow a business – driving growth, increasing jobs, and raising wages. It will back business by reduce complexity, improving finance access and delivering a regulatory system that supports growth and seizes Brexit opportunities. We will continue to promote British businesses abroad and secure new trade deals, while delivering key legislation including the Retained EU Law Bill.
Department for Culture, Media and Sport. A streamlined DCMS will continue to support our world-leading creative industries and our strong sporting sector. Equally importantly, it will bring forward our measures to support football, complete the review of the Gambling Act to make the UK the safest place in the world to gamble, and support our strong media sector.
