Paul Howell MP would like to encourage residents to participate in the Government's 'Plan For Drivers' Consultation.
Plan for Drivers: cracking down on disruptive road works. New measures could generate up to £100 million extra over 10 years to resurface roads across England.

This consultation presents a series of additional reforms to regulations that include:
- requiring at least 50% of any surplus lane rental funds to be spent on repairing potholes
- raising the level of fixed penalty notices (FPNs) that can be issued for 5 street works offences
- allowing overrun charges to apply at weekends and bank holidays

Roadworks can cause congestion and irritation for everyone who use our roads. We want to see them carried out quickly and effectively wherever possible to cause the least amount of disruption.
That’s why we are publishing a consultation on street works. It looks at how to stop road works from overrunning and includes proposals to allow more money paid through charges for utility companies for works on the busiest roads to be used for resurfacing and improving local roads.
The measures could generate up to £100 million extra over 10 years to repair potholes, while helping tackle congestion, cutting down journey times and providing motorists with greater peace of mind.
Launching yesterday on National Pothole Day, the consultation is part of the Government’s Plan for Drivers, a 30-point plan to support people’s freedoms to use their cars, curb over-zealous enforcement measures and back drivers.
In addition, the Government plans to make all temporary, experimental or permanent restrictions on traffic available digitally. These “Traffic Regulation Orders” include things like the location of parking spaces, road closures and speed limits. Making these digital means the most up-to-date information can be given to drivers so that their journeys will be reliable, more predictable and faster. It can also help them to find parking spaces.
Action is already in hand to achieve this, helping pave the way for the arrival of driverless vehicles, with a measure in the Automated Vehicles Bill currently before Parliament.
