Coeliac disease affects 1 in 100 people across the UK, yet nearly two thirds of those living with the condition have yet to receive a diagnosis. This translates to potentially 500,000 people in the UK, living and suffering avoidable harm due to undiagnosed coeliac disease. 🤒
As part of a series of evidence sessions, the APPG heard from healthcare professionals with expertise in coeliac disease from across primary and secondary care, patients and researchers. The challenges were many and the impact, on both patient population and the health service, significant. 👩⚕️
However, the APPG also heard of many opportunities to overcome these challenges, to the benefit not just of those with coeliac disease, but the wider healthcare system too. ⬆️
Quite simply, we must increase the number of diagnoses and reduce the time it takes for patients to receive a diagnosis. As the MP for Sedgefield, I will do all I can to draw attention to this vital, yet seldom recognised issue. 📝
