Today the Committee Stage of the Down Syndrome Bill begins. I am proud to support the Bill, this development brings us one step closer to introducing this groundbreaking piece of legislation.
For the first time people with Down Syndrome are beginning to outlive their parents. If we do not make provisions for this then there will be evitable human tragedies.
Not only do we have an opportunity to address this situation, but we can go further ensuring those with #DownsSyndrome can access Health, Education and Social Care Services.
If passed, it would place a duty on authorities providing health, care, education and housing to assess and plan to meet the needs of people with Down's syndrome.
It would also force the government to provide guidance to on how it can better accommodate people with the syndrome.
